Issue Brief XII: Maldives’ China Relations: Do Personal Predilections Influence National Policy?

C3S launched its Issue Brief initiative. An issue brief is a summary of the knowledge surrounding an issue or a problem. It summarizes the issue by giving clear, concise, and complete information describing all facets of a particular issue including a detailed illustration in the form of images, data, and facts. It also includes recommendations for action and predictions on the future course of an issue.


Abstarct


The election of a new President, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, 45, a PhD-holder in structural engineering, with seven-year experience as Works and Housing Minister (2012-18), may not have put Maldives’ China relations under stress, but it definitely will put it under the magnifying glass nearer home – just as the nation’s India ties came under the Opposition scanner during the outgoing Solih regime. The international media and Indian strategic community’s tag, ‘pro-China’ Muizz is yet to be proved while the ‘pro-India’ tag on outgoing President Ibrahim Mohamed ‘Ibu’ Solih was not actually there.
