C3S launched its Issue Brief initiative. An issue brief is a summary of the knowledge surrounding an issue or a problem. It summarizes the issue by giving clear, concise, and complete information describing all facets of a particular issue including a detailed illustration in the form of images, data, and facts. It also includes recommendations for action and predictions on the future course of an issue.

Abstract

With the completion of its permanent space station, Tiangong, in late 2022, China significantly advanced its ambitions to become a leading space power. The country's space program has achieved remarkable growth, including at least 13 successful crewed missions and more than 500 active satellites in orbit. From its modest beginnings, driven by the need to shield itself during the Cold War, China has evolved into a formidable player in the global space race, particularly in competition with the United States.

This study examines China's rapid ascent in the space domain, exploring the implications of this rise. It delves into the security challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, the intensifying competition and tensions with the United States, and the strategies employed to counterbalance China's growing space capabilities. Additionally, the study considers India's role as a counterbalance to China, analyzing their differing approaches to space and exploring the potential for space to serve as a platform for improving bilateral relations.
