From the Director’s Desk
Dear Readers,
Greetings from Chennai Centre for China Studies! (C3S) (www.c3sinida.org)
On behalf of all Members, Research Officers and Young Minds of C3S, it gives me immense pleasure to wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year filled with the light of knowledge and wisdom!
May 2017 be rewarding in every which way as you embark on new personal and professional endeavours.
A Year in Review
As we look back on what we were able to achieve, we can indeed look back with pride on achieving “much more with much less” in the year that went by despite many constraints. This could not have been possible with out the dedication and commitment of our researchers on one hand and on the other the support of our members from diverse backgrounds who have taken active interest in promoting our interests.
The young researchers and the young minds of the recently launched Young Minds of C3S group have been active in working hard to understand the nuances of China’s growth , regional and global implications in wide ranging areas from strategy, politics, economy, military and socio-cultural dimensions. Some of the major happenings during the year are listed below. The complete annual report is attached to this message.
We moved in to a new abode at No 15 Arcot Street, T.Nagar which houses “Athena Infonomics”. We would like to place on record our deep appreciation to Dr. S. Narayan, Mr. Vijay Bhalaki and Ms. Deepa Karthikeyan of Athena for providing us accommodation and unconditional support for carrying on with the activities of our think tank.
A sad moment of the year was the passing away of Shri Rajan, our Distinguished Fellow and the founding member of C3S in April 2016 while on a trip to USA. It has been an irreplaceable loss for C3S. His absence as an outstanding person and scholar is deeply felt by all of us and the China watchers around the world.
It is our aim to reach out to the youth of this country to enable them to study and understand China better. From that point of view, we have conducted joint programmes with Stella Maris, MGU, Kottayam, US Consulate in Chennai, National Maritime Foundation and Madras University.
The national seminar on “Changing Asian Landscape: Role of India and China” was conducted with Stella Maris College. An international conference was conducted along with NMF and Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Madras University on 18th November 2016.
We also conducted two joint conferences with Mahatma Gandhi University at Kottayam with focus on China.
Dr. John W. Garver, Emeritus Professor from Atlanta was with C3S to understand India’s perceptions about China and also participated in two Round Table Discussions conducted by C3S and NMF.
Ms. Asma Masood, Research Officer of C3S was selected to be part of an ICS delegation that visited China.
As in the past, many interns have been seeking the help of this think tank for carrying out research projects. We are happy to report that two of the interns were also able to bring out an occasional paper and a monograph .
As in the previous years, participation of C3S members in national and international conferences was a regular occurrence which allowed ample opportunities to share and learn at different forums around the world.
I would also like to acknowledge the support by MEA, well wishers and donors who have been supporting us since C3S’ inception. We look forward to your continued support, valuable feedback and suggestions for us to scale new heights in the coming years.
